The history of The Laughing Mermaid
Dave and Jeanne
The story of Laughing Mermaid, a charming coastal retreat, begins in the early 1990s when Dave, a certified builder, designed and built the property as a family holiday home. Over the years, it evolved into a beloved bed and breakfast known as Davey Jones Locker, then operated by a third party for more than 20 years under the name White Clay Resort.
Now, after decades of history and cherished memories, Dave and his wife Jeanne have decided to leave the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg to return to the coast, breathing new life into their property.
Shane and Kirsten
Partnering with Dave’s son Shane and daughter-in-law Kirsten, the family has launched Laughing Mermaid—a fresh chapter grounded in heritage, passion, and a shared vision.
Together, this dedicated team is focused on renovating, rejuvenating, and reinvigorating the space, creating a welcoming retreat where guests can explore the beauty of Coffee Bay’s White Clay, discover things to do near the sea, and experience the warmth of family hospitality amidst the charm of the Wild Coast.
